Can't Wipe Off the Grin

Thanks to an Oklahoma snow storm, my recent experience with train travel will be filed under "Can't Wipe Off the Grin" in my memory cabinet. Needing to return to Texas, a one way ticket on the Heartland Flyer proved to be comfortable, economical and grinnable!

Standing on the platform I'm a pre-teen again and Grandma and Grandpa Ramsey are hugging me goodbye. They are handing me off to the conductor, bags and snacks in hand and I wave to them from a large picture window, my view for the next 100 plus miles.

It's a comfort to know some things don't change much. The conductor still punches your ticket with a railroad issued hole punch. The muffled sound of wheels on rail accompanied by rail car sway are still cause to doze. Sprinkle in a little Oklahoma snow falling on the back roads and the grin gets stuck.

I plan to share this grin with my grandchild. We will do the silly train walk. We will traipse the moving platform between cars. We will bravely go where grandchildren before us have ventured - the snack car!
