A ranch horse from birth, he was purchased in west Texas by a couple of greenhorns with an ache to go western. He patiently adapted to ranchette life and provided organic material and entertainment. When the ache faded, he headed north to Oklahoma and enjoyed many a grazing hour with calves, cats and ranch dogs for companions.
Poncho fulfilled a dream of two teenage girls and the tack decorated the barn where the smell of horse and leather welcomed. He was an uncomplicated friend. He listened without judgement, provided a broad, warm back to lean on and was always ready for a romp to the pond. He never did anything stupid. He never tossed anyone to the ground. He never kicked or bit anyone. He was sturdy, strong and dependable.
Forever adaptable, Poncho adjusted to fly spray, horse trailers, novice riders, new horse friends and even blankets. He is loved and cared for, but older everyday. When he does decide to move to his final pasture, here's hoping it has a strong fence to lean on, old friends to nudge and plenty of grass to graze.
